Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Common Plantain (Plantago major) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and North America. Folk remedies have employed plantain leaves for a variety of ailments, including wounds, coughs, and inflammatory conditions. In several ethnobotanical sources, it is mentioned as a remedy for headaches, including those related to sinus congestion. Preparations such as teas, poultices, or infusions have been used either topically on the forehead or taken internally. The rationale in traditional practice often centers on the herb's reputed anti-inflammatory, demulcent, and mild analgesic properties, which could theoretically ease the discomfort of sinus headaches.

However, there is minimal scientific research directly examining the efficacy of plantain for headaches, including sinus headaches. While laboratory studies have confirmed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds within the plant, such as aucubin and allantoin, no clinical trials specifically address its use for sinus headache relief. Its inclusion in traditional pharmacopeias and herbal texts does provide a justification based on historical usage, but the lack of robust scientific evaluation limits the strength of the evidence. Thus, support for plantain's use in sinus headache is based primarily on tradition, rather than scientific validation.
