Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Litsea (particularly Litsea cubeba, also known as may chang) has a history of traditional use in several Asian medicinal systems for the management of headaches, including those associated with sinus congestion. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Litsea fruit and essential oil have been used as remedies for symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and nasal congestion. The essential oil is known for its fresh, lemon-like aroma and is believed to have anti-inflammatory and decongestant properties, which practitioners claim can help relieve sinus-related headaches when inhaled or applied topically (diluted). However, the evidence supporting Litsea’s effectiveness for sinus headaches is largely anecdotal and based on traditional practice rather than controlled scientific studies. There are very limited pharmacological studies on Litsea’s direct effects on headache or sinus congestion, and most available research focuses on its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro or in animal models. As such, while its use is justified by tradition, the quality and amount of evidence supporting its efficacy for sinus headache is low, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
