Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sage-leaf alangium (Alangium salviifolium) has a longstanding presence in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and other South Asian herbal practices. It has been used for a variety of ailments, including headaches, sometimes specifically those attributed to sinus issues. The traditional use is mainly based on its purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, with preparations of its leaves or bark sometimes being applied topically or used in decoctions to alleviate pain. However, peer-reviewed scientific evidence directly supporting its efficacy for sinus headache is extremely limited or absent. There are a few studies on the plant’s general pharmacological properties, such as anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in laboratory models, but these do not specifically address sinus headaches or provide clinical validation for this use. As such, its use for sinus headache relief remains grounded in traditional practice rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence is rated low.
