Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sandalwood (Santalum album and related species) has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems to address various ailments, including headaches and sinus issues. In these traditions, sandalwood is often applied topically as a paste to the forehead, temples, or nose, or inhaled as an essential oil, with the belief that its cooling and soothing properties help relieve headache pain, particularly headaches associated with heat and congestion, such as sinus headaches. However, there is limited scientific research specifically evaluating sandalwood’s efficacy for sinus headaches. The available modern studies focus mainly on sandalwood’s anti-inflammatory, mild analgesic, and anxiolytic properties, mostly in the context of aromatherapy or topical use for general relaxation and skin care rather than headache relief. Thus, while its use for sinus headaches is well-established in traditional medicine, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence from research remains indirect. As such, the rating reflects strong traditional precedent but weak clinical evidence.
