Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sesame oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly within Ayurvedic practices, for the management of headaches, including those related to sinus issues. In Ayurveda, sesame oil is commonly used in therapies such as "nasya" (nasal administration of medicinal oils) to alleviate symptoms of sinus congestion and headache. The oil is believed to have warming and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is sometimes massaged onto the scalp or used as nasal drops to reduce headache symptoms. However, while this traditional use is well-documented, the scientific evidence supporting sesame oil's efficacy for treating sinus headaches is minimal. There are limited modern clinical studies directly evaluating sesame oil for headache or sinus relief. Some laboratory studies suggest sesame oil has mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically contribute to symptom relief, but these effects have not been robustly confirmed in human trials focused on headache or sinus conditions. Thus, while tradition strongly supports its use, scientific validation remains lacking, and overall evidence is weak.
