Rating (out of 5): 2
White Peony (Paeonia lactiflora, known as "Bai Shao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) has a long-standing history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. In TCM, White Peony is commonly included in formulas for headaches, including those associated with sinus issues, because it is believed to nourish the blood, calm the liver, and alleviate pain. For example, it is a key ingredient in the well-known formula "Tong Qiao Huo Xue Tang," traditionally employed for headache and sinus congestion due to blood stasis and wind invasion. The herb is thought to help "soothe the liver" and "soften tight muscles," which practitioners believe can relieve headache symptoms.
However, while there is moderate traditional usage supporting its inclusion for headache, including sinus-related types, the evidence from modern scientific research is limited. Most scientific studies on White Peony focus on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, with some research suggesting it may reduce inflammation and modulate immune responses. Yet, direct clinical trials establishing its efficacy specifically for sinus headaches are lacking. Therefore, while White Peony's use for this purpose is justified by tradition and some pharmacological rationale, robust scientific validation remains absent.
