Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Albizia, particularly species such as Albizia julibrissin (Silk Tree), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other herbal systems. In TCM, Albizia is often referred to as "He Huan Pi" (bark) or "He Huan Hua" (flower) and is traditionally used to calm the spirit, relieve emotional constraint, and alleviate symptoms related to stress and tension, which can include headaches. The rationale in traditional practice is that Albizia helps "move qi" and "dispel constraint," which are believed to contribute to tension-type headaches. However, there is very limited direct scientific research or clinical trials supporting Albizia’s effectiveness specifically for tension headaches. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional use, with some animal studies suggesting mild anxiolytic and sedative effects. There is a lack of robust evidence from randomized controlled trials or pharmacological studies that directly link Albizia to headache relief. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition, the scientific basis for using Albizia to treat or support tension headaches is currently weak.
