Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Asian Plantain (Plantago asiatica) has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine, especially within Chinese and Korean herbal practices. In these systems, the plant’s seeds and leaves have been employed for a variety of ailments, predominantly targeting respiratory issues, urinary tract support, and inflammation. Its use for headaches, including tension-type headaches, is less well-documented but does appear in some traditional herbal compendia as a minor indication, often in combination with other herbs. The rationale in traditional medicine generally relates to its purported ability to “clear heat” or “eliminate dampness,” concepts specific to traditional Chinese medicine. However, scientific validation for this specific use is extremely limited. While some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in Asian Plantain, there is currently no robust clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for tension headaches. As such, the use of Asian Plantain for headache relief is primarily justified by tradition rather than scientific validation, and the overall quality of supporting evidence is rated as low.
