Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black mustard (Brassica nigra) has been used in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and European folk medicine, to address a variety of ailments, including headache and tension. Remedies often involve the application of mustard seed poultices or plasters to the skin, including the forehead or temples, with the belief that the counter-irritant effect can distract from the sensation of pain and reduce headache intensity. The volatile oils in mustard seeds, mainly allyl isothiocyanate, can cause local irritation and warmth, which is thought to improve circulation and provide some relief from muscular tension associated with headaches. However, there is no substantial scientific research or clinical trial evidence supporting the effectiveness of black mustard for treating tension headaches. Most modern sources cite only historical or anecdotal usage rather than validated biomedical mechanisms. Therefore, while the use of black mustard for headache relief is grounded in traditional practices, current scientific evidence for its efficacy is minimal. Topical application should also be approached with caution, as mustard plasters can cause skin irritation or burns if left on too long.
