Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cajeput (Melaleuca cajuputi) essential oil has a long history of traditional use in Southeast Asian and Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of ailments, including headaches, particularly those of the tension type. The oil is typically applied topically in diluted form or inhaled as part of aromatherapy practices. Folk medicine traditions often attribute its benefits to its warming sensation and its ability to promote relaxation and ease muscle tension, which may contribute to relief from tension headaches.

However, scientific evidence specifically supporting cajeput oil for headache relief is very limited. Most of the support comes from its traditional use and anecdotal reports, not from rigorous clinical studies. Cajeput oil does contain cineole (eucalyptol) and other components known for mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory settings, but direct evidence for efficacy in treating tension headaches in humans is lacking. Therefore, while cajeput is commonly used for this purpose in traditional medicine, its effectiveness remains largely unproven in modern scientific research.
