Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

California Peony (Paeonia californica) has traditionally been used by some Native American groups for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy for pain and muscle tension. Its use for tension headaches is primarily rooted in ethnobotanical reports, where preparations of the root were employed to ease general bodily discomfort and muscle pain, which could include headache pain caused by muscle tension. However, there is very limited specific documentation of its use exclusively for tension headaches. No clinical or pharmacological studies have investigated California Peony’s effects on headaches or tension-related pain, and the available traditional uses are generally anecdotal and not systematically recorded. Most of the evidence for its use in this context comes from surveys of traditional plant use in California, rather than from rigorous scientific inquiry. Therefore, while its use for tension headaches may have traditional roots, the strength of evidence is weak and should be approached with caution, especially since the safety and efficacy have not been established in modern research.
