Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Common Plantain (Plantago major) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Europe and North America. Its leaves have been used topically and internally for a variety of ailments, including as a folk remedy for headache (particularly tension-type headaches). In traditional herbal practice, plantain is often valued for its purported anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, which are thought to help relieve discomfort, including headaches resulting from tension or minor inflammation. However, there is a lack of direct scientific studies specifically investigating the effectiveness of Common Plantain for tension headaches. Most available scientific research on Plantago major focuses on its wound healing, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects, with only indirect relevance to headache treatment. As such, the use of Common Plantain for headaches is primarily rooted in tradition and anecdote rather than robust clinical evidence. No high-quality clinical trials have established its efficacy for this purpose. Therefore, while it is cited in herbal texts and folk medicine for this use, the evidence is weak and largely historical.
