Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Galangal, a rhizome related to ginger and commonly used in Southeast Asian cuisine and traditional medicine, has been employed in various traditional healing systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. While galangal is more often associated with digestive issues, inflammation, and respiratory complaints, there are historical references to its use for alleviating headaches, including tension-type headaches, primarily through its purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. However, the specific documentation of galangal for headache relief in traditional texts is limited and often anecdotal. Scientific studies directly supporting galangal for tension headaches are lacking. The available research on galangal focuses mostly on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which in theory could help with headache symptoms, but these effects have not been substantiated in clinical trials specific to headache management. Therefore, while its use for headaches is justified based on tradition, the evidence base is scant, and it should not be considered a well-established or validated remedy for tension headaches.
