Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gardenia jasminoides (commonly known as gardenia or "Zhizi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a history of traditional use for alleviating headache, particularly headaches associated with "heat" or tension in the context of traditional medical systems. Classical Chinese medicine texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and later compilations, describe its use as a cooling herb intended to clear heat and calm irritation, which may present as headaches, irritability, or restlessness. The fruit is often used in herbal formulas alongside other botanicals for this purpose. However, direct scientific studies evaluating Gardenia jasminoides for the treatment of tension-type headaches are lacking. There are limited preclinical studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of gardenia extracts, but these have not been translated into robust clinical evidence for headache treatment. Therefore, its use for headache is primarily rooted in traditional practice, with anecdotal and historical reports forming the bulk of support, and little to no direct modern clinical validation for this specific indication.
