Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea) has a history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, including as a remedy for headaches, particularly those believed to be caused by tension or nervous strain. Historical texts and folk medicine records describe its use as a tea or infusion for various ailments, including headaches. In these traditions, Ground Ivy was often valued for its purported anti-inflammatory and calming properties, and it was sometimes combined with other herbs for greater effect. However, the evidence supporting these uses is almost entirely anecdotal and based on traditional herbalist practices rather than modern clinical research.

To date, there is no substantial scientific evidence from clinical trials or pharmacological studies to validate Ground Ivy's effectiveness specifically for tension headaches. The plant does contain certain compounds, such as flavonoids and volatile oils, that theoretically could have mild anti-inflammatory or calming effects, but these have not been rigorously studied in relation to headache relief in humans. As such, while the use of Ground Ivy for tension headaches is documented in traditional herbal medicine, the overall strength of evidence supporting this use is weak.
