Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Horsemint (Monarda spp.), also known as wild bergamot, has a history of traditional use by various Native American tribes and herbalists for alleviating headaches, including tension-type headaches. Preparations made from the leaves and flowers were commonly used in teas, infusions, or poultices, and applied to the forehead or consumed to help relieve headache symptoms. The traditional rationale stems from the plant’s aromatic, calming properties and its content of volatile oils such as thymol and carvacrol, which were believed to have mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies specifically investigating horsemint’s effect on tension headaches. While some antimicrobial and mild anti-inflammatory properties have been demonstrated in laboratory studies of Monarda essential oils, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for headache relief is minimal. The use of horsemint for this purpose remains rooted in folk medicine and ethnobotanical reports rather than modern clinical trials. Thus, while horsemint’s use for tension headaches is supported by tradition, the current scientific validation is limited, and more rigorous studies would be needed to confirm these effects.
