Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Luo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii), also known as monk fruit, is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its cooling properties and its ability to moisten the lungs, relieve cough, and treat sore throat. There are some traditional references to its use for "heat" conditions or as a general wellness tonic, but there is minimal documentation supporting its use specifically for tension headaches in classical TCM literature. While broad claims about Luo Han Guo's benefits for "clearing heat" or relieving discomfort might lead to its occasional use for headache symptoms, it is not a primary or well-established remedy for tension headaches within the TCM tradition. Scientific research available to date does not directly connect Luo Han Guo to the prevention or treatment of headaches; most scientific studies focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties. As such, the use of Luo Han Guo for tension headaches is primarily justified by tradition, but even within that context, the evidence is weak and not well supported by classical texts or modern clinical studies.
