Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has a long history of use in traditional Japanese and Chinese medicine, where it is valued for its purported health benefits, including supporting the cardiovascular system. Traditionally, ashitaba has been used as a general tonic, believed to promote longevity and vitality. Its use for heart health is mostly based on its antioxidant properties and its role in promoting circulation, as described in folk medicine. The plant contains bioactive compounds such as chalcones, which are thought to have various health effects.

From a scientific perspective, there is limited but emerging evidence suggesting that certain constituents in ashitaba may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically demonstrating a direct cardiovascular benefit are lacking. Most of the research has been conducted in vitro or in animal models, and the results, while promising, are not sufficient to conclusively validate its traditional use for heart health. Therefore, the justification for using ashitaba to support the heart system remains primarily traditional, supported by a modest level of preliminary scientific evidence.
