Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Arginine (L-arginine) is a semi-essential amino acid that has been studied for its potential cardiovascular benefits, particularly in supporting heart function and treating conditions related to "heart weakness" such as congestive heart failure (CHF) and angina. The rationale for its use is largely based on its role as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that helps dilate blood vessels, improve blood flow, and reduce blood pressure. Several clinical studies have investigated L-arginine supplementation in patients with heart failure and other cardiovascular conditions. Some small-scale trials have shown improvements in endothelial function and exercise capacity in patients with heart failure. For example, a 2000 study published in the journal Circulation reported improved vascular function with L-arginine supplementation in CHF patients. However, larger and more recent studies have produced mixed results, and some have even suggested potential risks, such as worsening outcomes in certain subsets of heart failure patients or those who have recently had a heart attack. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend routine L-arginine supplementation for heart failure due to insufficient evidence of long-term benefit and possible harm. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some supporting evidence for L-arginine’s use in heart conditions, the overall strength of evidence is moderate and not conclusive, warranting a rating of 3 out of 5.
