Terminalia arjuna, commonly known as Arjuna, is a medicinal tree used traditionally in Ayurveda for cardiovascular health. The bark extract has been employed for centuries in India as a "cardiac tonic" to support heart function and treat conditions such as angina, hypertension, and heart failure. This traditional use has motivated scientific research into its efficacy. Modern studies provide moderate evidence for its cardioprotective effects. Several animal experiments and small-scale clinical trials have reported that Arjuna bark extract may improve cardiac function, reduce angina attacks, and lower blood pressure. For instance, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the journal "International Journal of Cardiology" (2002) found that Arjuna extract significantly improved left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with heart failure compared to placebo. Additionally, studies indicate antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects, which may contribute to its heart-protective properties. However, most clinical studies have small sample sizes and vary in quality, and there is a lack of large-scale, multi-center trials. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and there is promising scientific evidence for Arjuna’s role in supporting heart function and treating mild heart weakness, the overall strength of the evidence is moderate rather than robust.
