Evidence supporting the use of: Cistanche deserticola
For the health condition: Heart (weakness)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cistanche deserticola has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily as a tonic for kidney yang deficiency, and while its main indications are for constipation, impotence, and infertility, some traditional sources suggest it can support overall vitality and “strengthen the body,” which has been loosely interpreted as helping with weakness, including weakness of the heart. However, these references are not specific to cardiovascular disease or heart failure as defined by modern medicine. There is no robust or specific scientific evidence supporting Cistanche deserticola for treating heart weakness or cardiovascular conditions. Some preclinical studies have indicated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which are generally beneficial for health, but direct evidence for efficacy in heart disease or “heart weakness” is lacking. Therefore, its use for this purpose is mainly justified by traditional beliefs rather than scientific validation, and the evidence rating is low.
