Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a major polyphenolic compound found in green tea. Its use for cardiovascular support is primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than traditional medicine. Several preclinical and clinical studies have investigated EGCG for its potential cardioprotective effects. These benefits are thought to arise from EGCG’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering properties, which may help counteract some of the underlying factors contributing to heart weakness (such as oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction).

Animal and cell culture studies suggest that EGCG can reduce oxidative damage to heart tissue, improve vascular function, and inhibit processes that lead to atherosclerosis. In humans, some small-scale clinical trials and epidemiological studies have found associations between green tea consumption (and by extension, EGCG intake) and reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, improvements in cholesterol profiles, and mild reductions in blood pressure. However, these effects are generally modest, and results are sometimes inconsistent.

Currently, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to support EGCG as a stand-alone treatment for heart failure or significant heart weakness. Most data support its use as a supplementary measure for general cardiovascular health within the context of a healthy lifestyle. More large-scale, well-controlled studies are needed to establish its efficacy specifically for treating heart weakness. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, the strength of evidence is moderate and not definitive.
