Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Flat-stem milk-vetch (Astragalus adsurgens and related species) has been used in traditional Chinese and other herbal medicine systems, often under the general category of "Astragalus" (which commonly refers to Astragalus membranaceus). Traditional uses for Astragalus species include tonifying the "qi" (vital energy) and supporting general vitality, which can be interpreted in some contexts as supporting heart function or "heart weakness," particularly in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, scientific evidence specific to Flat-stem milk-vetch (Astragalus adsurgens) for treating heart weakness is lacking. Most studies and pharmacological data focus on Astragalus membranaceus, which has shown some promise in cardiovascular health, such as improving cardiac function in heart failure patients, but the data are still preliminary and often limited by study design and quality. There is little to no direct scientific research on Flat-stem milk-vetch itself for heart weakness. Thus, while there is a traditional basis for its use, especially by association with other Astragalus species, the scientific validation is minimal, and its efficacy for heart weakness remains unconfirmed by modern research.
