Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where they are believed to “nourish the heart,” tonify the yin, and improve general vitality. In TCM, “heart weakness” refers more to an energetic or functional deficiency rather than a specific biomedical diagnosis such as heart failure. Goji is often included in herbal formulas aimed at supporting the heart, calming the spirit, and boosting overall qi (vital energy). However, this traditional use is based largely on ancient texts and empirical use rather than modern scientific studies.
Modern research on goji berries has focused primarily on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Limited preclinical studies suggest potential protective effects on cardiovascular health, such as reducing oxidative stress and improving lipid profiles in animal models. However, there is little direct clinical evidence in humans to support the use of goji for treating or preventing heart conditions specifically described as “weakness.” Thus, the application for “heart weakness” rests primarily on traditional use, with minimal scientific validation available to date.
