Evidence supporting the use of: Mother of Pearl
For the health condition: Heart (weakness)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Mother of Pearl, also known as nacre, has been used in traditional medicine systems, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to support heart health and treat symptoms associated with "Heart weakness" such as palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia. In TCM, Mother of Pearl (Zhen Zhu Mu) is believed to have calming and stabilizing properties, thought to "anchor the spirit" and "pacify the heart." These uses are based on traditional energetic concepts rather than empirical scientific evidence.
Scientifically, there is little to no robust evidence supporting the use of Mother of Pearl for heart weakness or cardiovascular conditions. Modern pharmacological studies on nacre have focused mainly on its effects on bone growth, skin healing, and antioxidant properties, but not specifically on heart function or cardiovascular health. The mechanisms proposed by traditional practitioners have not been validated in clinical trials or biological research. Therefore, while Mother of Pearl has a historical basis for heart-related use in traditional medicine, it lacks scientific substantiation for this specific indication.
