Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ophiopogon japonicus (commonly known as "Maidong" or "Dwarf Lilyturf") has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly for nourishing "Yin," moistening the lungs, and supporting the heart. In TCM, it is often used in formulas to address what is described as "Heart Yin deficiency," which can manifest as palpitations, insomnia, irritability, and a weak or irregular heartbeat. Classic texts and pharmacopeias, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China, document its use for calming the mind, treating restlessness, and supporting cardiovascular health in the TCM framework.

Scientifically, there is some emerging evidence suggesting that extracts of Ophiopogon japonicus may have cardioprotective effects, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anti-apoptotic properties in cell and animal models. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and its efficacy for treating "heart weakness" or any specific cardiovascular condition is not well established in modern medicine. Thus, its use for heart-related issues is primarily justified by tradition rather than by strong scientific validation.
