Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly omega-3 fatty acids (such as EPA and DHA) found in fish oils, have a robust body of scientific evidence supporting their use in supporting heart health and treating conditions related to heart "weakness," such as heart failure and overall cardiovascular disease. Numerous large-scale epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that higher intake of omega-3 PUFAs is associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality, lower risk of arrhythmias, reduced blood pressure, decreased triglycerides, and improved endothelial function. In patients with heart failure, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids has shown modest but statistically significant benefits, including improved ejection fraction and reduced hospitalization rates, as seen in the GISSI-HF trial. The American Heart Association and other major cardiovascular organizations recommend the consumption of fatty fish or supplementation with omega-3 PUFAs as part of a heart-healthy diet. However, the evidence is stronger for primary and secondary prevention, while benefits for existing, advanced heart failure are less pronounced and somewhat variable depending on patient populations and dosages. Overall, the scientific consensus supports the use of PUFAs, especially omega-3s, in improving heart health and potentially mitigating symptoms and progression of heart "weakness."
