Evidence supporting the use of: San-Qi Ginseng
For the health condition: Heart (weakness)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
San-Qi Ginseng (also known as Panax notoginseng or simply Sanqi) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting heart health and treating cardiovascular “weakness.” In TCM, San-Qi is believed to “invigorate the blood,” “dispel stasis,” and “stop bleeding,” and is often prescribed for symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, or general cardiovascular weakness, which are sometimes interpreted as manifestations of heart disease or poor circulation.
From a scientific perspective, some preclinical studies and limited clinical trials have investigated Panax notoginseng’s effects on cardiovascular parameters, including its potential to improve blood flow, reduce blood pressure, and protect against myocardial injury. Its main bioactive components, notoginsenosides, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antithrombotic properties in animal and in vitro studies. However, robust clinical trials in humans are scarce, and thus the evidence is not conclusive for its efficacy in treating heart failure or “weakness” as defined in biomedical terms.
In summary, the use of San-Qi Ginseng for heart weakness is primarily justified by traditional use, with some preliminary scientific support but lacking high-quality clinical evidence. Its traditional role in TCM remains the strongest basis for its use in this context.
