Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sarivan (commonly identified as Desmodium gangeticum) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is regarded as a "Rasayana" and is believed to strengthen and rejuvenate the body, including the heart. Classical Ayurvedic texts mention Sarivan as beneficial for "Hridya" (heart health), often used in formulations intended to address weakness, fatigue, and general debility, which may include symptoms interpreted as cardiac weakness. It is said to improve vitality and act as a cardiotonic in the traditional context.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these traditional claims is limited. Few preclinical studies have explored the cardioprotective or cardiotonic potential of Desmodium gangeticum. Some animal studies suggest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which could have indirect benefits for cardiovascular health, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials or direct mechanistic studies demonstrating efficacy for treating heart weakness in humans. Overall, the use of Sarivan for heart weakness is primarily justified by tradition, with modest supporting evidence from laboratory studies, but not from high-quality human research.
