Ubiquinol, the reduced and active antioxidant form of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), is widely used to support heart health, particularly in cases of "heart weakness," such as heart failure or cardiomyopathy. The scientific rationale stems from ubiquinol’s central role in mitochondrial energy production (ATP synthesis) and its function as a powerful lipid-soluble antioxidant, protecting cardiac cells from oxidative stress.
Numerous clinical studies have evaluated CoQ10 (including ubiquinol) in heart failure patients. The landmark Q-SYMBIO trial (2014), a multicenter, randomized, double-blind study, demonstrated that CoQ10 supplementation (300 mg daily) significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events, including mortality and hospitalization, in patients with chronic heart failure. While most earlier studies used ubiquinone (the oxidized form), research suggests that ubiquinol may be better absorbed and more effective at raising plasma CoQ10 levels, particularly in older adults or those with impaired absorption. The use of ubiquinol is thus grounded in validated biochemical mechanisms, robust clinical trials, and positive meta-analyses. It is generally considered an adjunct to, not a replacement for, standard heart failure therapies.
