Wax gourd (Benincasa hispida), also known as ash gourd or winter melon, has been used in various systems of traditional medicine, particularly Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, wax gourd is said to have cooling, diuretic, and tonic properties. It is sometimes recommended for general "heart weakness" or palpitations, though this concept does not always align directly with Western medical definitions of heart disease or heart failure. The use is based on the belief that its cooling and hydrating effects can help manage symptoms such as restlessness and mild palpitations, which are sometimes interpreted as signs of heart weakness in traditional frameworks.
However, scientific evidence supporting wax gourd’s efficacy for heart weakness or cardiovascular disorders is very limited. While some preliminary studies suggest that wax gourd extracts may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cholesterol-lowering effects, these findings are not directly linked to clinical outcomes in heart failure or specific measures of heart strength.
