Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a species of white rot fungus that has been studied extensively for its unique enzymatic capabilities, particularly its ability to degrade lignin and a wide range of environmental pollutants. Scientific research has shown that this fungus can also interact with heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, mercury, and chromium. Laboratory studies demonstrate that P. chrysosporium can adsorb and sometimes transform heavy metals from contaminated solutions, primarily through biosorption onto its cell wall components and via enzymatic mechanisms.

Several studies published in peer-reviewed journals have documented the use of P. chrysosporium in bioremediation processes to remove heavy metals from industrial wastewater and contaminated soils. These investigations highlight its potential as a cost-effective and efficient biological tool for heavy metal remediation in environmental settings. However, it is important to note that nearly all of this evidence comes from environmental biotechnology research, not from clinical or medical studies involving human subjects. There is no evidence to support its direct use as a treatment for heavy metal poisoning in humans. The existing scientific validation is strictly related to its environmental applications, not clinical therapy. Thus, while the fungus demonstrates promising potential for heavy metal removal from the environment, there is no basis for recommending it as a treatment for human heavy metal poisoning at this time.
