Allium tuberosum, commonly known as Chinese chive or garlic chive, has a documented history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for a variety of ailments, including hemorrhoids. In TCM, Allium tuberosum seeds (referred to as Jiǔ Cài Zǐ) are used to support "kidney yang" and address symptoms such as lower back pain, nocturnal emissions, and, less commonly, hemorrhoids. The traditional rationale for its use in hemorrhoids is related to its purported ability to "move qi," promote blood circulation, and reduce swelling, which are believed to help alleviate symptoms associated with hemorrhoidal inflammation or bleeding. However, modern scientific studies specifically investigating Allium tuberosum for hemorrhoid treatment are lacking. Few, if any, clinical trials or pharmacological studies have evaluated its efficacy or mechanisms in this context. Most evidence is anecdotal or based on TCM theory rather than empirical research. Thus, while its use for hemorrhoids is justified by tradition, scientific support is minimal, and its effectiveness for this purpose remains unproven according to current biomedical standards.
