Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arsenic has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for a variety of ailments. Its application for hemorrhoids, however, is primarily based on traditional or folkloric practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, arsenic compounds were sometimes included in patent medicines and topical preparations for their purported anti-inflammatory or astringent effects. Historical texts occasionally reference the use of arsenic-containing compounds to reduce swelling or discomfort in hemorrhoidal tissues, but these uses were not based on systematic research and are not supported by modern clinical studies. Furthermore, arsenic is now recognized as a toxic substance with significant adverse health risks, including carcinogenicity and systemic toxicity, which outweigh any perceived benefits for hemorrhoid treatment.

No reputable clinical guidelines or contemporary research advocate for the use of arsenic in the management of hemorrhoids. Modern medicine has virtually abandoned arsenic for this indication due to its established dangers and the availability of safer, more effective treatments. Therefore, while there is a weak traditional precedent, its use is not scientifically validated and is considered obsolete and hazardous.
