Evidence supporting the use of: Bergenia Pacumbis
For the health condition: Hemorrhoids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bergenia pacumbis (syn. Bergenia ligulata) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, especially Ayurveda and Unani, where it is commonly known as "Pashanbheda." Its use for hemorrhoids is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In these systems, extracts of Bergenia pacumbis are employed for their purported astringent, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Classical texts cite its application in managing piles (hemorrhoids) to help reduce bleeding, swelling, and discomfort.
Scientific data to support these claims are limited. While some phytochemical studies have identified the presence of polyphenols, bergenin, and arbutin, which may have anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, there are no well-controlled clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for hemorrhoids in humans. Most available studies focus on its use for kidney stones and urinary disorders rather than anorectal conditions. Thus, while there is a basis for its use in traditional medicine, scientific validation for its effectiveness in hemorrhoid management is lacking, and the evidence strength rates as 2 on a 0-5 scale, reflecting reliance on tradition and limited preclinical pharmacological rationale.
