Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Borassus Palm (Borassus flabellifer), also known as the Palmyra Palm, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across South and Southeast Asia. Its roots, fruit, and sap are used for various ailments, including hemorrhoids. Folk practitioners in Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani systems have recommended Borassus Palm parts—particularly the roots and fruit pulp—as remedies for piles (hemorrhoids), primarily for their perceived cooling, astringent, and laxative properties. The rationale is likely due to its fiber content (helping relieve constipation, a contributing factor to hemorrhoids) and traditional beliefs about its anti-inflammatory effects. However, there is a clear lack of modern clinical or preclinical studies directly evaluating these claims. Published scientific literature does not provide robust evidence for Borassus Palm’s efficacy in treating hemorrhoids in humans or animals. Most available data relate to its nutritional content, antioxidant properties, and general health benefits, not specifically to hemorrhoidal disease. As such, while the use of Borassus Palm for hemorrhoids is well-rooted in tradition, its effectiveness is not supported by scientific validation, and the quality of the traditional evidence is weak.
