Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bran, particularly wheat bran, is used to support the management of hemorrhoids, and this use is supported by scientific evidence. Hemorrhoids are often associated with constipation and straining during bowel movements. Increasing dietary fiber intake is a well-established medical recommendation for alleviating these symptoms. Bran is a rich source of insoluble fiber, which increases stool bulk and promotes regular, soft bowel movements, thereby reducing straining and irritation of hemorrhoidal tissue.

Clinical studies and authoritative guidelines, such as those from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American Gastroenterological Association, routinely recommend increased dietary fiber for prevention and management of hemorrhoids. Randomized controlled trials (e.g., Misra et al., 1981; Alonso-Coello et al., 2006) have shown that fiber supplementation, including with bran, reduces the frequency of bleeding, pain, and recurrence of symptomatic hemorrhoids.

While bran is not a cure for hemorrhoids, its role in symptom management is well-validated. The strength of evidence is moderate (rated 3/5), as benefits are seen primarily in symptom reduction, not in reversing existing hemorrhoidal tissue. Nevertheless, bran is a safe and accessible intervention with a solid scientific basis for use in this context.
