Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Celosia species, particularly Celosia argentea, have been used in traditional medicine systems, especially in Africa and Asia, to manage various ailments, including hemorrhoids. In traditional African medicine, the leaves and seeds are commonly prepared as decoctions or poultices for application to inflamed tissues, with purported benefits including reduction in swelling and promotion of wound healing. The use is based largely on empirical knowledge and longstanding practices rather than scientific validation.

Scientific studies on Celosia’s effects specific to hemorrhoids are sparse. Some laboratory studies have shown that extracts of Celosia argentea possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties, which could hypothetically provide symptomatic relief in hemorrhoidal conditions. However, these studies are preliminary, often conducted in vitro or in animal models, and do not directly evaluate hemorrhoidal disease. There is a lack of high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies that specifically support its efficacy or safety for hemorrhoids in humans. Thus, while there is a rationale based on its general anti-inflammatory and healing properties, the evidence remains weak, and its use for hemorrhoids is best characterized as traditional rather than scientifically validated.
