Evidence supporting the use of: Chamomile
For the health condition: Hemorrhoids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla and Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history of traditional use for a variety of skin and mucosal conditions, including hemorrhoids. Traditionally, chamomile is employed in the form of topical ointments, creams, sitz baths, or compresses to help soothe irritation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing of external hemorrhoids. The rationale for its use is primarily based on its well-known anti-inflammatory, mild analgesic, and soothing properties, which are attributed to constituents such as bisabolol, chamazulene, and flavonoids. While these properties are supported by laboratory studies and chamomile is widely recognized as a gentle anti-inflammatory herb, the specific application for hemorrhoids remains grounded in historical and ethnobotanical literature rather than robust clinical research.
There are a few small studies and case reports that suggest potential benefits in symptom relief, such as reduced itching and irritation, but high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials are lacking. As a result, the evidence is rated as low to moderate (2/5). Most clinical guidelines do not specifically recommend chamomile for hemorrhoids, but its use persists in folk medicine and commercial topical preparations. Overall, chamomile’s use for hemorrhoids is justified by tradition, with limited scientific validation of its efficacy for this specific indication.
