Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Commiphora species, particularly Commiphora mukul (guggul) and Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), have a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including hemorrhoids. In Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine, preparations containing Commiphora resins are sometimes recommended for the management of hemorrhoids, attributed to their purported anti-inflammatory, astringent, and wound-healing properties. Traditional texts often describe formulations combining Commiphora extracts with other botanicals to reduce swelling, alleviate pain, and promote healing of anal tissues affected by hemorrhoids.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Commiphora for hemorrhoids is limited. Most available studies focus on the general anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Commiphora extracts, rather than direct clinical trials on hemorrhoidal disease. There are a few small studies and anecdotal reports from traditional medicine practice, but these lack the rigor of large, randomized controlled trials. As a result, while traditional use is well-documented, robust scientific validation for its effectiveness in treating hemorrhoids is lacking. Therefore, its rating is moderate, reflecting the gap between traditional endorsement and scientific substantiation.
