Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyathula, particularly Cyathula prostrata and Cyathula officinalis, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Asia and Africa. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Cyathula officinalis (commonly known as "Chuan Niu Xi") is used to invigorate blood circulation, dispel stasis, and reduce swelling, functions that underpin its use in conditions like hemorrhoids. Similarly, in African ethnomedicine, Cyathula prostrata is employed for treating piles (hemorrhoids), where it is believed to reduce inflammation, pain, and bleeding. The rationale in these systems is based on general properties attributed to the plant, such as anti-inflammatory and circulatory benefits, rather than targeted clinical studies. Some laboratory studies have shown anti-inflammatory and hemostatic effects in extracts from Cyathula species, but these are preliminary, not specific to hemorrhoids, and lack validation in human clinical trials. There is a notable absence of high-quality, controlled clinical studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Cyathula for hemorrhoids. Therefore, while Cyathula is traditionally used to manage hemorrhoids and some of its pharmacological activities may align with the needs of this condition, robust scientific validation is lacking. Its use remains primarily rooted in traditional practice, with limited empirical support from modern research.
