Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cynodon dactylon (commonly known as Bermuda grass or durva grass) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and some folk practices, for the management of hemorrhoids. The traditional rationale stems from its attributed properties: it is considered astringent, anti-inflammatory, and soothing, all of which are thought to help reduce swelling, bleeding, and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. In Ayurvedic texts, preparations from Cynodon dactylon are sometimes applied topically or consumed as fresh juice to treat piles and other bleeding disorders.

However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. There are a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects of Cynodon dactylon extracts, but direct clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating its efficacy for hemorrhoids are lacking. The rating of 2 reflects the presence of some plausible pharmacological activity (e.g., anti-inflammatory, hemostatic), but the absence of robust human data. Its use for hemorrhoids is primarily justified by historical and traditional knowledge rather than modern scientific evidence.
