Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Guggullipid resin, derived from the gum of the Commiphora mukul tree, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. In Ayurveda, guggul (the source of guggullipid) is considered to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and purifying properties. It has been used for a variety of conditions, including joint disorders, high cholesterol, and inflammatory conditions. Its use for hemorrhoids (piles) is primarily based on traditional applications, where it is believed to help reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation associated with hemorrhoids. Some Ayurvedic formulations for hemorrhoids include guggul as a component, often in combination with other herbs thought to benefit circulation and reduce local inflammation.

However, modern scientific validation supporting the use of guggullipid specifically for hemorrhoids is very limited. Most of the available research focuses on its lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects in other contexts. There are no robust clinical trials or systematic reviews directly investigating its efficacy or safety for hemorrhoid treatment. Thus, while its use is justified by hundreds of years of traditional practice, current scientific evidence does not substantiate its effectiveness for this condition. The evidence rating is therefore low, reflecting the lack of direct scientific support despite its traditional use.
