Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kokilaksha (Asteracantha longifolia, also known as Hygrophila auriculata) is an herb widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Its use for the treatment or support of hemorrhoids is primarily based on traditional practice rather than robust modern scientific validation. Ayurvedic texts describe Kokilaksha as having properties such as mutrala (diuretic), rasayana (rejuvenative), and vrushya (aphrodisiac). In some formulations, it is included for its purported anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, which are thought to help in conditions like hemorrhoids (piles). The rationale is that these properties may reduce local inflammation, promote healing of anal tissue, and alleviate discomfort.

However, direct scientific studies evaluating Kokilaksha specifically for hemorrhoids are lacking. Most of the available evidence comes from anecdotal usage, traditional formulations, and secondary references in Ayurvedic compendia. Some preliminary pharmacological studies on Kokilaksha suggest anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties, but these do not directly confirm efficacy for hemorrhoids. Thus, while the traditional use is well-documented within Ayurveda, the evidence from modern clinical research remains minimal, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
