Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) has been traditionally used in some East Asian systems of medicine for a variety of ailments, including hemorrhoids. Traditional herbal medicine texts from China and Korea describe the use of persimmon leaves, fruit, or even the calyx in decoctions or topical applications to help stop bleeding, reduce inflammation, and promote wound healing—properties considered beneficial for hemorrhoid symptoms. The tannins present in persimmon are thought to provide astringent effects, which could help shrink swollen tissue and reduce bleeding. However, scientific validation for these effects in the context of hemorrhoid treatment is limited. There are a few laboratory and animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and hemostatic properties of persimmon extracts, but robust clinical trials in humans specifically for hemorrhoids are lacking. Thus, while persimmon’s use for hemorrhoids is supported by tradition and some plausible mechanisms, current evidence from rigorous scientific studies is minimal, and its efficacy remains unproven in modern clinical practice.
