Evidence supporting the use of: Sichuan Pagoda Tree
For the health condition: Hemorrhoids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sophora japonica, commonly known as the Sichuan Pagoda Tree or Japanese Pagoda Tree, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of hemorrhoids. The flower buds (Huai Hua) and fruits (Huai Jiao) are often used in various TCM formulas aimed at "clearing heat," "cooling the blood," and "stopping bleeding"—mechanisms believed to be relevant for hemorrhoidal bleeding and inflammation. Historical texts, such as the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing and later TCM materia medica, describe its use for bleeding disorders, including hematochezia (blood in stool), which may accompany hemorrhoids.
Scientific evidence is less robust. Some laboratory and animal studies have identified potential anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and vascular-protective effects of extracts from Sophora japonica, including active compounds such as rutin and quercetin. These compounds may theoretically contribute to reducing bleeding and inflammation. However, well-controlled clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating the efficacy of Sichuan Pagoda Tree for hemorrhoids are lacking. Most of the available evidence is either anecdotal, based on traditional usage, or derived from preclinical research. Thus, the rating reflects strong tradition but only preliminary scientific support.
