Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Taraxacin is a bitter compound found primarily in dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). The use of dandelion, and by extension taraxacin, in the management of hemorrhoids is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine rather than modern scientific research. Traditional systems, particularly in Europe and Asia, have used dandelion preparations for their purported anti-inflammatory, digestive, and mild laxative properties. Since constipation and straining can aggravate hemorrhoids, remedies thought to promote regular bowel movements—such as dandelion—have sometimes been recommended in folk medicine to indirectly support hemorrhoid relief. However, there is no direct scientific evidence demonstrating that taraxacin itself, or dandelion extracts containing taraxacin, have a specific or significant effect on hemorrhoids. Most available studies about dandelion focus on its diuretic effects or potential liver benefits, not on hemorrhoid treatment. Thus, while the use of dandelion for hemorrhoids persists in some traditional practices, the evidence supporting taraxacin’s efficacy for this condition is minimal and largely anecdotal rather than evidence-based.
