Animal protein, though unspecified in type, has some scientific support for its role in supporting hepatic (liver) function, particularly in the context of liver disease or recovery. Proteins are essential macronutrients required for the synthesis of enzymes, repair of tissue, and maintenance of immune function—all critical in liver health. Clinical guidelines for patients with chronic liver disease, such as cirrhosis, typically recommend adequate protein intake to prevent muscle wasting (sarcopenia) and support metabolic processes. Studies have shown that protein malnutrition is a common complication in liver disease and is associated with poorer outcomes.
