Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Antrodia camphorata, also known as "niu-chang-chih" or "camphor mushroom," is a medicinal fungus endemic to Taiwan and traditionally used in folk medicine for liver health. Scientific studies over the past two decades have investigated its effects on the hepatic system. Preclinical research, including in vitro and animal studies, suggests that extracts of Antrodia camphorata possess hepatoprotective properties. These effects are attributed to its rich content of triterpenoids, polysaccharides, and other bioactive compounds, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic activities. For example, studies have shown that Antrodia camphorata can reduce liver enzyme levels, oxidative stress, and hepatic damage in models of chemically induced liver injury (such as those caused by CCl4 or alcohol).

Some small-scale human studies have been conducted, indicating potential benefits in supporting liver function and modulating markers of liver injury. However, these clinical trials are limited in number, sample size, and methodological quality, so definitive conclusions cannot yet be drawn. Most of the scientific support is thus derived from laboratory research and animal studies, rather than robust clinical evidence. Nonetheless, the mechanistic plausibility and traditional use provide a moderate level of support for its use in hepatic system support. More well-designed human clinical trials are needed to fully validate efficacy and safety.
