Berberine is a bioactive compound found in several plants, including Berberis vulgaris (barberry). Its use for hepatic (liver) support is backed by a growing body of scientific research. Several preclinical and clinical studies have shown that berberine exhibits hepatoprotective properties, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering effects. Animal and human studies indicate that berberine can help improve markers of liver function, reduce liver enzymes (such as ALT and AST), and ameliorate histological features of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It appears to modulate hepatic lipid metabolism by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which influences lipid and glucose homeostasis. Berberine has also shown promise in improving insulin resistance and reducing hepatic steatosis, both risk factors for liver dysfunction. While more large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety, current evidence supports its use as an adjunct in managing certain liver conditions, particularly NAFLD and metabolic syndrome-related liver disorders.
